Behind Arc Signal

Why I built Spectra.

I’m Pretlow Stevenson III, founder and sole developer of Arc Signal. I build software to help people understand their surroundings and make informed decisions about their privacy.

The purpose

Understanding starts
with better questions.

What is nearby? What does a signal tell me? What deserves a closer look?

Those questions are at the heart of Spectra. Our surroundings are full of connected devices, yet the information they make available can be difficult to interpret. I wanted to put useful observations within reach and give people a clearer way to understand nearby signals, challenge assumptions about what they mean, and make informed decisions.

Spectra brings nearby Bluetooth observations, advertised services on your local network, and magnetic-field measurements into one place. Each is a different way to explore. The value comes from understanding what was observed, how it was interpreted, and where uncertainty remains.

That is why the details matter to me. A finding should show its supporting evidence. An unfamiliar signal should invite a thoughtful next step. And the app should be clear about what a measurement can and cannot establish.

Independent ownership

My perspective.
My responsibility.

Arc Signal is an independent, African American–owned software company.

I’m proud of that identity and of building a company where my perspective has a direct place in the work. Ownership gives me the freedom to set a clear direction and the responsibility to stand behind the result.

As founder and sole developer, I carry that responsibility from the first design decision through the code, the explanations, and the next improvement. The person deciding what Spectra should be is also the person doing the work to make it better.

For me, that means paying attention to the whole experience: readable results, useful guidance, respect for your data, and care in the small details. Each part should make the product easier to understand and use.

The commitment

Earn trust.
Keep improving.

Privacy shapes how I build Spectra. Scans are processed on your device, and you decide what to save or share. The app requires no account and includes no advertising or analytics.

Honest limits matter just as much. Spectra can help you investigate available signals. A finding is a clue, and a quiet scan cannot establish that a space is safe. Useful software should help you exercise your judgment with a clearer understanding of the evidence.

I continue to improve the device catalog, recognition, and the experience of reviewing results. Questions and feedback help me see where explanations need more care and where the app can become more useful.

Thank you for taking the time to learn who is behind Spectra. I want that care to be visible every time you use it.
