Use Spectra to inform your next decision—not to certify that a space is safe. Silent, wired, shielded, powered-off, or unrecognizable devices can remain invisible.
Hotels, rentals, and shared housing
Start with a Quick Check to get oriented. Use an unhurried Area Sweep for accessible areas you are allowed to inspect. In gyms and changing rooms, respect other people's privacy and facility rules. A broadcast may come from outside the room; an unfamiliar name is not evidence of covert recording.
For a close-range physical inspection, select Motion and magnetic in Area Sweep. Repeatable changes may warrant a closer look for concealed electronics, even without a recognizable wireless broadcast. Ordinary magnets and magnetic metal can cause changes too; no change does not rule out a device. See Use the magnetic meter for safe practice and the limits.
Rideshares, cafés, and travel hubs
As a passenger or while waiting, a Quick Check offers a short snapshot. Specialist checks focus on supported glasses or wearable matches. Crowds contain ordinary devices, and a name or signal strength cannot identify the person carrying one. Do not scan while driving or confront someone based on a result.
Review what the check actually covered
Inspect Coverage, clear measurement filters and name search, and consider unclassified activity. In specialist checks, View observed activity offers wider context. Expected is your label for the check, not authenticated safety. A saved check describes an earlier observation, not the space now.
Protect your connection, too
Confirm the intended Wi-Fi name with the venue through a trusted channel. A familiar network name alone does not authenticate it. Prefer cellular data when you do not trust the connection, keep software updated, protect accounts with multifactor authentication, and heed certificate warnings.
A reputable VPN can protect traffic routed through its tunnel between your phone and the VPN service; trust shifts to that provider. It does not prevent nearby recording, authenticate a hotspot, make a malicious website safe, or make you anonymous. Follow your organization's policy. VPN settings may affect local discovery; do not disable required protection or join an unfamiliar network just to find more devices. Spectra does not provide a VPN.
Keep useful context without collecting unnecessary personal details
Rename a saved session and add notes about repeatable observations, areas inspected, ordinary explanations, and unresolved questions. Notes are yours, not sensor evidence. Avoid sensitive itinerary or personal details, and review reports before sharing. Local-network browsing can send queries visible to others on that network; it is not covert.
For a credible threat or highly sensitive activity, move sensitive conversations to a more appropriate location and consult a trusted security contact. Do not tamper with equipment based on an app result.
